Going Green #2

So about a week ago we got the new prius...I wasn't too excited at first...weather has been crappy the last few days so my wife has been taking my car (gas guzzling SUV) and leaving me with the "golf cart" as i call it.

I hate to admit it, but i actually love the car...not only does it drive well and have alot more pickup than i expected...it gives you immediate updates on your MPG's..... which being of the competitive persuasion, has made driving the prius a game for me...

Every time i go out my goal is now to get better milage than i did before....which frequently pisses off those driving around me because you get better milage at 55 mph than if i drive my normal 75 to 80 mph. Yesterday i had up to 65 mpg... the funny thing is...i get better mileage driving in the city than highway...

My point...prius is an awesome car...much to my chagrin..

People are like rabbits

I was having a conversation with a colleague earlier today and this subject came up.

when i was growing up in Pennsylvania I did alot of small game hunting...rabbits, pheasant, etc...

when hunting for rabbits you start walking through a field...take about 10 steps then stop and wait.

Like people rabbits like to know where they stand in relation to you...so as long as they can hear you walking they are happy and know they are safe (assuming you are not about to step on them).

When you stop...they can't hear you any more and start to wonder..."where is he?"..."what should i do?"...and panic sets in and they bolt...that is when you shoot them.

Poeple are the same way...as long as you are effectively communicating with them...even though it may not be good news..they are happy because they know where they stand....once that communication stops people become scared rabbits and tend to do stupid things.

As a manager i have always made it my priority to make sure that the people reporting to me always know where they stand....and for the most part...barring the crazies...it makes for a much more harmonious environment to work in.

Honor and Loyalty

Do honor and loyalty have a place in society today?

I am one of those people with antiquated beliefs like 'you do what you say and people will respect you for that' and 'always keep a promise' and 'when working for an organization .... if you always look out for the organization you will be rewarded for that'.

Well....I am beginning to question the value of honor and loyalty in today's society. It seems to me that people are more than happy use ones honor and loyalty to manipulate and use them for their own gains.

Is this something new?...or have i just stumbled upon a cluster of individuals that neither have nor understand the meaning of honor and loyalty?

In the end I don't see myself abandoning my fundamental code...however i believe i was naive in thinking that the majority of people had honor and valued loyalty...in the end i now believe that most people are out for themselves and what they can connive an manipulate from others.

For my experiences i may not be a better person....but I am now a better prepared person...and even more cynical than i have been.
